The rushes or lizards are the name given to the genera of bulrushes or lizards, which is distributed worldwide with about 300 species, in Germany 29 species. Characteristic feature of these perennial grasses are the rigid, roundish and bristly pointed blades. These are mostly hollow or filled with a spongy stellar parenchyma, which serves the supply of oxygen. Die Binsen bzw. Simsen sind die namengebende Gattung der Binsengewächse bzw. Simsengewächse, die mit weltweit etwa 300 Arten, in Deutschland 29 Arten, verbreitet ist. Kennzeichnendes Merkmal dieser ausdauernden Gräser sind die starren, rundlichen und borstig zugespitzten Blattspreiten. Diese sind meist hohl oder mit einem schwammartigen Sternparenchym erfüllt, welches der Versorgung mit Sauerstoff dient.
