The Biotar is a six-lens lens for film and photographic cameras. Its basic construction follows the Gaussian double lens. Biotar constructions already achieved high light intensity in the 1920s. Just like the Planar, the four lenses of the Gaussian double lens are expanded on each side by a further outer lens. The inner two pairs of lenses are cemented as in the planar. The Xenon lens, developed by Albrecht Wilhelm Tronnier for Schneider-Kreuznach in 1925, was followed by the Zeiss engineer Willi Merté in the introduction of an important asymmetry: the field-side (front) three-part lens group was overall larger than the group behind the diaphragm. Furthermore, the two outer collecting lenses are each of a larger diameter than the two inner lens pairs. The first steps in this direction had gone to Horace Williams Lee of the Taylor-Hobson Company. The biotar was offered by Zeiss for a decade, often with a remarkable initial light intensity of 1: 2 at a focal length of 58 mm (a calculation of 1936 for KB reflex cameras).

Das Biotar ist ein sechslinsiges Objektiv für Film- und Fotokameras. Seine Grundkonstruktion folgt dem Gaussschen Doppelobjektiv. Biotar-Konstruktionen erreichten schon in den 1920er Jahren eine hohe Lichtstärke. Genau wie beim Planar werden beim Biotar die vier Linsen des Gaussschen Doppelobjektivs auf jeder Seite um eine weitere äußere Linse erweitert. Die inneren zwei Linsenpaare sind wie beim Planar verkittet. Dem 1925 von Albrecht Wilhelm Tronnier für Schneider-Kreuznach entwickelten Xenon-Objektiv folgte der Zeiss-Konstrukteur Willi Merté in der Einführung einer wichtigen Asymmetrie: Die feldseitige (vordere) dreiteilige Linsengruppe wurde insgesamt größer ausgeführt als die hinter der Blende befindliche Gruppe. Weiterhin sind die beiden äußeren Sammellinsen jeweils von größerem Durchmesser als die beiden inneren Linsenpaare. Die ersten Schritte in dieser Richtung war Horace Williams Lee der Taylor-Hobson Company gegangen. Das Biotar wurde von Zeiss jahrzehntelang angeboten, oft mit einer beachtlichen Anfangslichtstärke von 1:2 bei einer Brennweite von 58 mm (eine Berechnung von 1936 für KB-Spiegelreflexkameras).
