Col legno

Col legno

Col legno is a play instruction for strings that has a brittle, percussive sound. The strings are not easily beaten or painted with the hair of the bow, but with its wooden pole. As a bizarre effect, the collegno appears as early as the 17th century, until late-romanticism it is rather rare, since then it is frequently used. New music does not use it with the intention of alienating or grotesque. For the first time, Tobias Hume asked for this technique in one of his works, and also in the Capriccio Stravagante of Carlo Farina. In the last movement of Mozart's violin concerto No. 5 the col legno characterizes the so-called "Turkish theme". Joseph Haydn, in the second movement of his Symphony No. 67, calls for the Col-legno-play with dampers. Particularly in the large-scale symphony orchestra, the effect is particularly impressive in Franz Liszt's Mazeppa, Gustav Mahler's Second Symphony, Arthur Honegger's La Danse Macabre, and Arnold Schönberg's Moses and Aron.
