dehydrogenases

Dehydrogenasen

Dehydrogenases are enzymes which oxidize their substrate by elimination of hydrogen anions. They should not be confused with the dehydratases which split off water. Dehydrogenases belong to group I of the EC classification, they occupy the two subclasses EC 1.1.1.- and EC 1.1.2.-. The electrons and the cleaved hydrogen are transferred to cofactors such as NAD + or FAD. Different dehydrogenases can be distinguished depending on the substrate. For example, the enzyme that converts ethanol into acetaldehyde during alcohol degradation is ethanol, the alcohol dehydrogenase. The oxidation of the L-lactate to pyruvate is catalyzed by the lactate dehydrogenase. Like all enzymes, dehydrogenases also catalyze the reverse reaction in reversible reactions, here the reduction. Thus, the counterreaction to the above-mentioned oxidation of lactate to pyruvate is at least as important as this itself. It takes place in the glycolysis when the pyruvate can not be introduced into the citrate cycle via acetyl-CoA and NAD + is required for other reactions Especially for the glyceraldehyde 3-phosphate dehydrogenase.
