fecaloma

Kotstein

Kotsteine, also known as Koprolith, Fekalom, Faecalith or Enterolith, are stone-like structures whose core consists of massively thickened faeces around which layers of mucus and dried-up intestinal contents may have deposited. Kotsteins prefer to deposit in blind ends of the intestine. One finds calcareous stones, among others, in diverticules of the colon, in the caecum, and in the appendix vermiformis, and in the ampulla recti. Among the complications of calcareous stones are, among others, the ileus with its consequences as well as intestinal perforations with consecutive peritonitis or abscesses. In the Anglo-American literature, cootins are referred to as coprolith or enterolith.
