Otolith

Statolith

Statolith

Statoliths, otoliths, otokonia or statoconia are microscopically small granules up to several centimeters of solid material, found in single cells and in the position and equilibrium organs of many other living organisms. Through their inert mass and their weight, they enable the organism to perceive accelerations and the direction of gravity. The term otolith refers, on the one hand, to the fact that these structures are located in the inner ear during vertebral plexus, on the other hand, they serve the sense of hearing in many fishes. Otokonia in the strict sense is the biominerals of mammals made of calcium carbonate. Statitas can be freely movable in multiple cells in statocysts, or they can be attached to the hairs of sense cells. Pressure, tensile and shearing forces are perceived. The reflexes triggered by the gravity-sense organs lead to the living being able to maintain its normal position in space.
