eparch

Eparch

Eparch was a superior and commander-in-chief, especially the provincial governor. The eparchy was the dignity of an Eparchen and also the administrative district assigned. The Byzantine empire, in its earlier period, was divided into sixty eparchies, from which statistical surveys are preserved: ▪ Synekdemos of Hierocles, probably from the time of the Emperor Justinian I. ▪ Georgios Cyprius The kingdom of Greece owned until 1886 59 Eparchen, which were then abolished , Except for a brief reintroduction from May 1891 to July 1892. The office is also known from Byzantine-influenced states such as Makuria. There the Eparch of Nobatia had an important function.
