Extrapolation

Extrapolation is the definition of a behavior beyond the bounded range. A statistical extrapolation is also referred to as a projection. Another approach is the interpolation, in which the behavior is described within the range of secured values even in cases which have not been investigated. The extrapolation usually requires interpolation, as in the case of Richardson extrapolation for numerical differentiation. In this case, an interpolation polynomial is set by some interpolation poles and then the value of the interpolation polynomial is determined at the value to be calculated. This is useful if the individual calculations of the function values close to the limit value become more and more complex, and thus it appears to be unacceptable from the complexity to be very close to the limit value. However, in order to keep the extrapolation error small, it is necessary to establish certain criteria for the selection of the support points. It is found that the quotient of the successive distances of the support points to the limit value of a fixed number is less than 1.
