Harmattan

Harmattan

The Harmattan is a continental wind system of North Africa blowing north-east between 10 ° and about 20 ° north latitude. In general, it blows in the arid regions of the Sahara all year. From the Western Sahara to the Cape Verde Islands, he carries large quantities of desert dust and sand, which can be seen as dusty on satellite images. It occurs mainly in the dry season and in the Boreal winter in the regions of the Sahel and Sudan and is replaced by the southwest monsoon in the summer months. Through the Harmattan, sediments are carried to the Atlantic by wind turbines. Regions where the Harmattan almost blows all year round is the Bodélé depression, the mountainous regions of the Aïr, Tibesti and the plateau of Djado; The deserts Ténéré and Grand Erg du Bilma.
