Ammonium bituminosulfonate, also marketed under the trademarks Ichthammol and Ichthyol, is a product based on natural raw materials. The first step is the dry distillation of kerogen-rich oil shale, a petroleum nutrient rock in which an enrichment of organic material - predominantly plankton - took place due to anoxic conditions. Sulphonation and subsequent neutralization of certain fractions of the crude shale oil result in ammonium bituminosulfonate as a sulfonate salt in aqueous solution. Pure ammonium bituminosulfonate is a viscous, black liquid. Ammonium bituminosulfonate is a multi-component mixture, for the most part sulfonated thiophene derivatives. In contrast to tars, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons are only present in small traces. From an elementary analysis, Eugen Baumann and Carl Schotten calculated a chemical formula for the active substance neutralized with sodium hydroxide solution.

Ammoniumbituminosulfonat, auch unter den Warenzeichen Ichthammol und Ichthyol vermarktet, ist ein Produkt auf Basis natürlicher Rohstoffe. Es entsteht im ersten Schritt durch trockene Destillation von kerogenreichem Ölschiefer, einem Erdölmuttergestein, in dem durch anoxische Bedingungen eine Anreicherung von organischem Material – vorwiegend Plankton – stattfand. Durch Sulfonierung und nachfolgende Neutralisation bestimmter Fraktionen des rohen Schieferöls resultiert Ammoniumbituminosulfonat als Sulfonat-Salz in wässriger Lösung. Reines Ammoniumbituminosulfonat ist eine visköse, schwarze Flüssigkeit Ammoniumbituminosulfonat ist ein Vielkomponentengemisch, zum Großteil aus sulfonierten Thiophenderivaten. Im Gegensatz zu Teeren sind polycyclische aromatische Kohlenwasserstoffe nur in geringen Spuren enthalten. Aus einer Elementaranalyse berechneten Eugen Baumann und Carl Schotten 1883 eine chemische Formel für den mit Natriumhydroxid-Lösung neutralisierten Wirkstoff.
