WHAT DOES JASPERWARE MEAN IN GERMAN?

Jasperware

Jasperware, describes a ceramic material, which is technologically processed partly as a stoneware, partly as a soft porcelain, is often also not correctly attributed to the earthenware. Its essential ingredients are clay, barium sulfate and flint, also called heavy spar. Jasperware was developed by Josiah Wedgwood in Staffordshire. It is inspired in its forms by ancient models and marks the style change to classicism in English ceramics. Wedgwood sought the highest artistic quality by adopting designs like John Flaxman. Since the end of the 1760s, he had developed a black, very hard stone-like material with the basalt material. A little later, since about 1775, he also developed his vessels and ornaments in pastel colors. Masses dyed with metal oxides were processed into unglazed material, which gave a matte, biscuit-like surface. The colors used were predominantly matt blue, but also seagreen, yellow and gray.
