Katboot

A catboat is a single-mast sailing boat type whose mast is placed close to the bow. Although all one-masters only fit the type of cat-tipped boat with a dashboard, the traditional catboat is characterized by a width of about half the length of the trunk, a mid-sword and a gaffodel. Some historic cat boats such as the Barnegat Bay type are, however, already, like the modern cat-tacked sailing dinghies, highly rigged. In some cases, a jib was driven, but a Klüverbaum was necessary. If this is the case, the catboot is to be referred to as a slup in the technical sense. It is generally assumed that the origin of the catwalk in New York was around 1840, from which, due to its strengths, simplicity in equipment and operation, flat draft and large cargo capacity, spread to the east and south. Initially, the boats were used for fishing and transport in coastal waters around Cape Cod, Narragansett Bay, New York and New Jersey.

Ein Katboot bezeichnet einen einmastigen Segelbootstyp, dessen Mast nahe am Bug gesetzt ist. Obwohl alle Einmaster nur mit Schratsegel dem Typ des katgetakelten Bootes entsprechen, zeichnet sich das traditionelle Katboot durch eine Breite von etwa der Hälfte der Länge des Rumpfes, ein Mittelschwert und Gaffeltakelung aus. Einige historische Katboote wie der Barnegat Bay-Typ sind allerdings schon, wie die modernen katgetakelten Jollen, hochgetakelt. In einigen Fällen wurde ein Klüver gefahren, hierzu war allerdings ein Klüverbaum notwendig. Ist dies der Fall, ist das Katboot im technischen Sinne allerdings als Slup zu bezeichnen. Es wird allgemein angenommen, dass der Ursprung des Katbootes in New York um 1840 liegt, von wo aus sich aufgrund seiner Stärken, - Einfachheit in Ausstattung und Bedienung, flacher Tiefgang und große Ladungskapazität - nach Osten und Süden ausbreitete. Anfänglich wurden die Boote zum Fischfang und Transport in küstennahen Gewässern um Cape Cod, die Narragansett Bay, New York und New Jersey genutzt.
