The apparent brightness indicates how bright a heavenly body - especially a fixed star - appears from the earth. The apparent brightness is indicated as a number, which carries the addition magnitude, size class or simple size. The smaller the number, the brighter the star is. Today's scale for the measurement of the apparent brightness is derived from the Greek astronomers Hipparch and Ptolemy, who classified the stars according to their brightness into six classes. The brightest stars were added to the first size, the weakest of the sixth size. Later the scale was extended to both sides in order to be able to classify lighter objects as well as weaker objects after the advent of the telescope. The brightness scale was logarithmically defined by Norman Pogson in 1850, so that a star of first magnitude is exactly 100 times as bright as a star of sixth magnitude. Stars of the first size are brighter than stars of the second size by the factor. The scale was calibrated on so-called standard stars. ▪ Very large telescopes reach to about 22.

Die scheinbare Helligkeit gibt an, wie hell ein Himmelskörper – insbesondere ein Fixstern – von der Erde aus erscheint. Die scheinbare Helligkeit wird als Zahl angegeben, diese trägt den Zusatz Magnitude, Größenklasse oder schlicht Größe. Je kleiner die Zahl, desto heller ist das Gestirn. Die heutige Skala zur Messung der scheinbaren Helligkeit geht auf die griechischen Astronomen Hipparch und Ptolemäus zurück, welche die Sterne nach ihrer Helligkeit in sechs Größenklassen einteilten. Die hellsten Gestirne wurden der ersten Größe zugerechnet, die schwächsten der sechsten Größe. Später wurde die Skala nach beiden Seiten hin erweitert, um sowohl hellere Objekte als auch – nach Aufkommen des Teleskops – schwächere Objekte einordnen zu können. Die Helligkeitsskala wurde 1850 von Norman Pogson logarithmisch definiert, so dass ein Stern erster Größe genau 100 Mal so hell ist wie ein Stern sechster Größe. Sterne der ersten Größe sind um den Faktor heller als Sterne der zweiten Größe. Die Eichung der Skala erfolgte an sogenannten Standardsternen. ▪ Sehr große Teleskope reichen bis etwa zur 22.
