neurotoxin

Nervengift

A nerve poison or neurotoxin is a poison which specifically affects nerve cells or nerve tissue. It interferes primarily with membrane proteins and the interactions in ion channels. Nerve pens are usually used in the animal kingdom as a defense or prey toxin against vermin. Most neurotoxins are exogenous toxins, they come from the environment and are absorbed by the organism. There are also some gases. The most common nerve pens are, however, solids and liquids. The effect depends strongly on the dosage. Alcohol is acutely non-toxic in small amounts, but larger amounts and longer intake are also detrimental to the respiratory system. In everyday life, exogenous nerve pains are ▪ alcohol ▪ atropine or hyoscyamine ▪ botulinum toxin ▪ caffeine ▪ fluoride ▪ nicotine In parallel to these exogenous neurotoxins, there are also endogenous toxins, see excitotoxicity.
