Opisthotonus

The Opisthotonus is a spasm in mainly the stretch musculature of the back. It leads to a strong backward bending of the head and to the over-stretching of the trunk and extremities. It occurs as a symptom in some neurological diseases, such as lesions of the middle cerebrum, cerebral hemorrhages, maple syrup disease, meningitis, and also in tetanus, and as a side-effect in the early dyskinesia of neuroleptic animals. In addition, it can occur in other neurological diseases, such as the cerebral form of malaria. Der Opisthotonus ist ein Krampf in vor allem der Streckmuskulatur des Rückens. Er führt zu einer starken Rückwärtsneigung des Kopfes und zur Überstreckung von Rumpf und Extremitäten. Er kommt als Symptom bei einigen neurologischen Erkrankungen wie Schädigungen des Mittelhirnes, Gehirnblutungen, Ahornsirupkrankheit, Meningitis und auch bei Tetanus sowie als Nebenwirkung im Rahmen der Frühdyskinesien bei Neuroleptikagabe vor. Außerdem kann er bei weiteren neurologischen Erkrankungen, so der zerebralen Form der Malaria auftreten.
