The pancreas - in the medical specialist language: the pancreas - is a glandular organ of the vertebrate lying transversely in the upper abdomen. The digestion enzymes formed by the digestion enzymes are transferred into the twinning intestine via one or two passages. It is therefore an exocrine gland. Die Bauchspeicheldrüse – in der medizinischen Fachsprache: das Pankreas – ist ein quer im Oberbauch liegendes Drüsenorgan der Wirbeltiere. Die von ihr gebildeten Verdauungsenzyme werden über ein oder zwei Ausführungsgänge in den Zwölffingerdarm abgegeben. Sie ist daher eine exokrine Drüse. Diese Verdauungsenzyme spalten Eiweiße, Kohlenhydrate und Fette der Nahrung im Darm in ihre Grundbestandteile und zerkleinern sie damit in eine von der Darmschleimhaut aufnehmbare Größe. Darüber hinaus werden in der Bauchspeicheldrüse Hormone gebildet, die direkt an das Blut überführt werden. Damit ist sie gleichzeitig auch eine endokrine Drüse. Dieser endokrine Anteil des Pankreas sind die Langerhans-Inseln, die vor allem für die Regulation des Blutzuckerspiegels sowie von Verdauungsprozessen verantwortlich sind. Eine Entzündung des Pankreas führt durch die freiwerdenden Verdauungsenzyme zu einer Selbstverdauung. Bei einem Funktionsausfall des exokrinen Teils kann die Nahrung nicht mehr aufgeschlossen werden.
