As a polis (the 'old' πόλις pólis, 'town', originally also: 'castle' / Plateau Poleis, the πόλεις póleis) is usually the typical state association in ancient Greece, (Χώρα chōra, ἄστυ asty) and the surrounding area (χώρα chōra, 'Chora'). Its inhabitants were not legally distinguished by the inhabitants of the urban center. The typical polis was a community or a people's association and did not define itself primarily through their territory, but through their members (→ citizens # Greece). It became the classical concept for the city state in antiquity; But whether it can actually be formally considered as such has long been controversial in research. Since the emergence of the Polis in archaic times (ca. 700-500 BC) and because of the large number of new foundations in Hellenism (323-30 BC)

Dessen Bewohner wurden von den Einwohnern des urbanen Zentrums rechtlich nicht unterschieden. Die typische Polis war eine Bürgergemeinde bzw. ein Personenverband und definierte sich nicht primär über ihr Territorium, sondern über ihre Mitglieder (→ Bürger#Griechenland). Sie wurde zum klassischen Begriff für den Stadtstaat in der Antike; ob sie jedoch tatsächlich formal als solcher gelten kann, ist in der Forschung seit langem umstritten. Seit der Entstehung der Polis in archaischer Zeit (ca. 700–500 v. Chr.) und wegen der großen Zahl an Neugründungen im Hellenismus (323–30 v. Chr.
