As propylon is the gateway, which leads in the area of Greek sanctuaries, which is usually surrounded by walls, later also into other public buildings and installations. The plural form Propylaea is also used for certain gateways. In antiquity, the plural forms Propylaia or Propyla were not only great gate facilities, but the conceptual distinction to propylon remains unclear.
