Roussillon is a landscape and historical province in southern France. It covers approximately the present-day department of Pyrénées-Orientales with Perpignan as the main town. The valleys of the Têt and the Tech are spread on the east foot of the Canigou chain to a very fertile plain with a Mediterranean climate and lush vegetation with a flat, coarse coastline, formed by debris, forming the Côte Vermeille with the lagoon coast. Its name was the medieval county of Rosselló on the northern edge of the Pyrenees on the Mediterranean. It was one of the historical Catalan counties created under Charlemagne to protect the Franconian Empire against the Moors on the Iberian Peninsula as part of the "Spanish Mark". As a result of the Pyrenean peace of 1659, the county of Rosselló, together with the other counties in North Catalonia, was separated from the rest of Catalonia and awarded to France. The "Ancien Régime" of France summarized the whole territory into a new province and named it after the county of Roussillon.

Die Täler der Têt und des Tech verbreitern sich am Ostfuß der Canigoukette zu einer sehr fruchtbaren Ebene mit Mittelmeerklima und üppiger Vegetation, der ein aus Schuttmassen aufgebauter, flacher Küstenstreifen vorgelagert ist, der mit der nordwärts anschließenden Lagunenküste die Côte Vermeille bildet. Namensgeber war die mittelalterliche Grafschaft Rosselló am Nordrand der Pyrenäen am Mittelmeer. Sie war eine der historischen Katalanischen Grafschaften, die unter Karl dem Großen geschaffen wurde, um als Teil der „Spanischen Mark“ das Fränkische Reich gegen die Mauren auf der Iberischen Halbinsel zu schützen. Als Folge des Pyrenäenfriedens von 1659 wurde die Grafschaft Rosselló gemeinsam mit den anderen Grafschaften in Nordkatalonien vom restlichen Katalonien abgetrennt und Frankreich zugesprochen. Das „Ancien Régime“ Frankreichs fasste das gesamte Gebiet zu einer neuen Provinz zusammen und benannte diese nach der Grafschaft Roussillon.
