It is considered as "America's classical music" and today is essentially perceived as a piano style, but was first played on other instruments and by larger ensembles. The usual etymological interpretation derives the name Ragtime from ragged time, which refers to the syncopated melody lead and its contrast to the rigid rhythm of the accompaniment. A different interpretation suggests a reference in the musical record of 1899, which states: "The negroes call their clog-dancing, ragging 'and the dance a, rag' And even John Philip Sousa orchestrated Ragtimes in his repertoire, and blues musicians such as Blind Blake and Blind Boy Fuller also transferred the ragtime to the guitar. Today they are mostly understood as "City Ragtime" on the piano.
