Viscose fibers are referred to as chemical fibers, which are spun out industrially from cellulose, now predominantly in the form of wood pulp, by means of the viscose process, the most widely used wet spinning process. The pulp is converted into cellulose xanthogenate in successive processing stages by treatment with sodium hydroxide solution, thus forming alkali cellulose and its subsequent reaction with sulfur carbon. A further addition of sodium hydroxide solution produces the viscose spinning solution, which is pumped into the spinning bath through holes of roach-like spinning nozzles. There, a viscose filament is produced by coagulation per spinneret hole. By stretching and further processing steps and the combining of the individual filaments, viscose filament yarns or, respectively, by additional cutting of viscose pinned fibers are produced. Previously, the viscose filament yarns were referred to as rayon or artificial silk, the spun fibers as cell wool. The chemical composition of the viscose fibers is similar to that of cotton.

Als Viskosefasern werden Chemiefasern bezeichnet, die ausgehend von Cellulose, heute überwiegend in Form von Holzzellstoff, mit Hilfe des Viskoseverfahrens, dem am weitest verbreiteten Nassspinnverfahren, industriell ersponnen werden. Der Zellstoff wird in nacheinander folgenden Prozessstufen durch Behandlung mit Natronlauge, wodurch sich Alkalicellulose bildet, und deren anschließender Umsetzung mit Schwefelkohlenstoff zu Cellulose-Xanthogenat umgewandelt. Durch eine weitere Zugabe von Natronlauge wird die Viskose-Spinnlösung erzeugt, die durch Löcher von brausenartigen Spinndüsen in das Spinnbad gepumpt wird. Dort entstehen durch Koagulation pro Spinndüsenloch ein Viskose-Filament. Durch Verstrecken und weitere Bearbeitungsschritte und dem Zusammenfassen der einzelnen Filamente entstehen Viskosefilamentgarne bzw. durch zusätzliches Schneiden Viskosespinnfasern. Früher wurden die Viskose-Filamentgarne als Reyon oder Kunstseide, die Spinnfasern als Zellwolle bezeichnet. Die chemische Zusammensetzung der Viskosefasern ähnelt dabei der von Baumwolle.
