spongin

Spongin

Spongin is a collagen-like protein, which forms framework fibers in most sponges, such as the horn pebbles. These sponge fibers crosslink the sponge needles made of lime and silicates in the mesohyl and thus give the sponge its shape and allow the inflow of nutrients by forming a canal system. Spongin plays an important role in the sponges of the horn, since they can not have spicules and thus the entire skeleton is formed from spongin. Lime sponges and glass sponges do not have sponge fibers and therefore build their scaffold only from lime and silicate spicules.
