stagflation

Stagflation

The Stagflation describes the state of a monetary area in which economic stagnation and inflation coincide. During a phase of stagflation, an economy is not able to exploit the production capacities more intensively through increased use of funds and credit facilities, nor to reduce the excessive money evaluation rate through a lower activity level. Both goals are mutually exclusive and represent an economic policy dilemma. This phenomenon, which was unknown until the end of the 1960s, was first observed in 1969 in the USA and Great Britain. The term was also used in the Federal Republic of Germany in the early 1970s to explain comparatively long-lasting economic stagnation and a comparatively high inflation rate. The word creation Stagflation is attributed to the British finance minister Iain Macleod and John Overcountry, who died in 1970.
