Tetrachord

A tetrachord is a four-tone sequence with the frame interval of a pure fourth. The concept is taken from the theory of music in ancient Greece and is still used today to explain the construction of scales. Of the various forms customary in ancient Greece, only the so-called diatonic tetrachord has entered the Western musical theory. This tetrachord is composed of two whole tones and one semitone, the following variants being possible: whole tone whole tone semitone, whole tone semitone whole tone and semitone whole tone whole tone. The classical diatonic scales can be composed of two equally-structured tetrachords, with the addition of a further whole tone, assuming the same conditions as were based on the ancient Greek scales. There are two cases: ▪ The two tetrachords are unconnected and the additional whole tone is centered between them. ▪ The two tetrachords are connected by a common sound and the additional whole tone is added at the top or bottom.
