Trifle

Trifle is an English dessert, consisting of several layers of custard, fruit or jam, biscuit cake and whipped cream. The biscuit is generally impregnated with alcohol. The word Trifle is derived from the Middle English trite, which, in turn, goes back to French, and signifies trifling or nullity. The different layers of a trifle The dessert has changed over time. There was already in the end of the 16th century in England a dessert called Trifle, which consisted essentially of beaten cream and very similar to today's fool had. The oldest known recipe with this name appeared in 1596 in the book The Good Huswife's Jewell. The present form of the trifle dates back to the middle of the 18th century, prepared from impregnated biscuit and custard, as well as a layer of syllabub, which was later replaced by whipped cream. The first recipe of this kind was published by Hannah Glasse. Closely related to trifles are desserts like tipsy cake, whim-wham and zuppa inglese.
