votive candle
Sacrificial candle, sacrificial light, votive candle or prayer candle are called candles which are placed as a visible sign of prayer, often in a special concern, in a church outside the liturgy. Sacrificial candles in the Orthodox Church Valamo Leuchterbaum, evangelische Klosterkirche Drübeck Catholic, orthodox and increasingly evangelical churches have specially designed candlesticks or chandeliers, which are sometimes artfully designed, and offer the sacrificial lights needed for a small amount of money. Many sacrificial candles, often also larger, specially designed pilgrimage candles, burn in pilgrimage churches. In some places of pilgrimage, such as in Kevelaer or Ars, there are own candle chapels. The burning light symbolizes the glory of God, to which prayer is addressed, and at the same time the worship, the thanks, and the petition which rise to him. In the case of a Marian or other image of the Virgin, in Catholic churches, it is a request for their intercession with God.
