Consul

Consul was the highest elected office of the Roman Republic and an appointive office under the Empire. The title was also used in other city states and also revived in modern states, notably in the First French Republic. The relating adjective is consular, from the Latin consularis.

Definition of consul in the English dictionary

The first definition of consul in the dictionary is an official appointed by a sovereign state to protect its commercial interests and aid its citizens in a foreign city. Other definition of consul is either of two annually elected magistrates who jointly exercised the highest authority in the republic. Consul is also any of the three chief magistrates of the First Republic.
