WHAT DOES ERGOT MEAN IN ENGLISH?

ergot

Ergot

Ergot or ergot fungi refers to a group of fungi of the genus Claviceps. The most prominent member of this group is Claviceps purpurea. This fungus grows on rye and related plants, and produces alkaloids that can cause ergotism in humans and other mammals who consume grains contaminated with its fruiting structure. Claviceps includes about 50 known species, mostly in the tropical regions. Economically significant species include C. purpurea, C. fusiformis, C. paspali, and C. africana. C. purpurea most commonly affects outcrossing species such as rye, as well as triticale, wheat and barley. It affects oats only rarely. C. purpurea has at least three races or varieties, which differ in their host specificity: ▪ G1 — land grasses of open meadows and fields; ▪ G2 — grasses from moist, forest, and mountain habitats; ▪ G3 — salt marsh grasses.

Definition of ergot in the English dictionary

The first definition of ergot in the dictionary is a disease of cereals and other grasses caused by ascomycete fungi of the genus Claviceps, esp C. purpurea, in which the seeds or grain of the plants are replaced by the spore-containing bodies of the fungus. Other definition of ergot is any fungus causing this disease. Ergot is also the dried sclerotia of C. purpurea, used as the source of certain alkaloids used to treat haemorrhage, facilitate uterine contraction in childbirth, etc.
