Definition of maquis in the English dictionary

The first definition of maquis in the dictionary is shrubby mostly evergreen vegetation found in coastal regions of the Mediterranean: includes myrtles, heaths, arbutus, cork oak, and ilex. Other definition of maquis is the French underground movement that fought against the German occupying forces in World War II. Maquis is also a member of this movement.
