Marshal is a term used in several official titles in various branches of society. As marshals became trusted members of the courts of Medieval Europe, the title grew in reputation. During the last few centuries, it has been used for elevated offices, such as in military rank and civilian law enforcement.

Definition of marshal in the English dictionary

The first definition of marshal in the dictionary is an officer of the highest rank. Other definition of marshal is an officer, usually a junior barrister, who accompanies a judge on circuit and performs miscellaneous secretarial duties. Marshal is also a Federal court officer assigned to a judicial district whose functions are similar to those of a sheriff.
