The Panhellenic Socialist Movement, known mostly by its acronym PASOK, is a social-democratic political party in Greece. It was founded on 3 September 1974 by Andreas Papandreou as a democratic socialist party. On 18 October 1981, PASOK became Greece's first left-of-centre party to win a majority in the Hellenic Parliament. PASOK is a member of the Socialist International, the Progressive Alliance and the Party of European Socialists. PASOK MEPs sit with the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats in the European Parliament. Formerly one of the two major parties in Greek politics, PASOK lost much of its popular support as a result of the unprecedented austerity measures that accompanied an international bailout requested by the government of George Papandreou in response to the Greek government-debt crisis. Following two legislative elections which failed to produce a parliamentary majority for any single party, PASOK agreed to form a coalition government with its conservative rival New Democracy in June 2012.
