A reflex action, differently known as a reflex, is an involuntary and nearly instantaneous movement in response to a stimulus. Scientific use of the term "reflex" refers to a behavior that is mediated via the reflex arc; this does not apply to casual uses of the term "reflex".

Definition of reflex in the English dictionary

The first definition of reflex in the dictionary is an immediate involuntary response, esp one that is innate, such as coughing or removal of the hand from a hot surface, evoked by a given stimulus. Other definition of reflex is a mechanical response to a particular situation, involving no conscious decision. Reflex is also a reflection; an image produced by or as if by reflection.
