WHAT DOES REFRACTIVE INDEX MEAN IN ENGLISH?

refractive index

Refractive index

In optics the refractive index or index of refraction n of a substance is a dimensionless number that describes how light, or any other radiation, propagates through that medium. It is defined as , where c is the speed of light in vacuum and v is the speed of light in the substance. For example, the refractive index of water is 1.33, meaning that light travels 1.33 times slower in water than it does in vacuum. Refraction of a light ray. The refractive index determines how much light is bent, or refracted, when entering a material. This is the historically first use of refractive indices and is described by Snell's law of refraction,, where and are the angles of incidence and refraction, respectively, of a ray crossing the interface between two media with refractive indices and. The refractive indices also determine the amount of light that is reflected when reaching the interface, as well as the critical angle for total internal reflection and Brewster's angle.

Definition of refractive index in the English dictionary

The definition of refractive index in the dictionary is a measure of the extent to which radiation is refracted on passing through the interface between two media. It is the ratio of the sine of the angle of incidence to the sine of the angle of refraction, which can be shown to be equal to the ratio of the phase speed in the first medium to that in the second. In the case of electromagnetic radiation, esp light, it is usual to give values of the absolute refractive index of a medium, that is for radiation entering the medium from free space ν, μ.
