Actiniaria

Actiniaria

Sea anemones or actinias, Actiniaria, are an order of hexacorales anthozoans. It is a marine animal that normally adheres to the substrate of the sea, sometimes in the sand of the bottom, in others, in the rocks, and even in the shells of crustaceans or mollusks. They measure from 1.5 cm to 2 m high. They are solitary polyps, which look more like a colorful plant than an animal itself. There are about 1,200 species described. The most popular species are within the genus Heteractis, with long tentacles, such as Heteractis magnifica or Stichodactyla, with much smaller tentacles, such as Stichodactyla mertensii, which gives them some aspect of towel or carpet.
