WHAT DOES AZORAFA MEAN IN SPANISH?

Giraffa camelopardalis

The giraffe is a species of artiodactyl mammal of the Giraffidae family of Africa. It is the highest of all living species of terrestrial animals. The top of the head can reach 5.8 meters in height and can weigh from 750 kg to 1.6 tons. The common name 'giraffe' and the first term of the binomial name Giraffa comes from the Arabic الزرافة, which means 'high'. The second term that gives name to the species camelopardalis comes from the Greek καμηλοπάρδαλη camelopardale and from the Latin camelopardalis, that means "leopard camel". The giraffe is related to cervids and bovids, but belongs to another family, the jiráfidos, which only includes the giraffe and its nearer relative, the okapi. Julius Caesar introduced the first giraffe in Europe brought from his campaigns in Asia Minor and Egypt where he met Cleopatra. Without being clear what animal it was, the Romans baptized cameleopardo, a cross between camel and leopard, becoming the scientific name that is used until today. The giraffe usually lives in savannahs or in open spaces.
