Caruncle

Carúncula

The caruncules are carnosidades that present some birds in the head and the neck generally of vivid colors. They are areas without feathers of variable extension, that can be located around the eyes and the cheeks, cover totally the head or the neck, or to form protuberances of eréctil nature, like crests and other type of bulges hanging near the peak, in the throat Or neck. The term comes from the Latin "caruncula" that is the diminutive of "carno" that means meat. Frequently the caruncles are secondary sexual characters, being those of the larger males, of more intense coloration or even of different color. For example, the ridges of the roosters are larger than those of the hens. Caruncles generally develop fully or reach definitive pigmentation with sexual maturity, and tend to have more intense colors and appear more turgid in the reproduction period.
