Centuria

The century was an infantry unit of the Roman army, forming the backbone of the legions and Roman auxiliary units. It consisted of 80 men distributed in 10 contubers - in Latin contubernia - of 8 men each. Each contubernio was housed in a tent or cubicle of 6-seat barrack - the fourth of it was always on guard. The whole century was commanded by the centurion, who was aided by an optio or lieutenant and by a tesserarius or security officer. It had a banner or signum that was carried by a signifer. Also, each century had a buccinator, in charge of playing the buccina, a kind of horn used to transmit acoustic orders by way of ringing. The centurias were grouped administratively in pairs forming sticks of 160 infants, and these, in turn, operatively in groups of three forming a cohort of 480 legionaries. By way of exception, the first cohort, made up of the strongest men in the legion, consisted of only five centuries.

La centuria era una unidad de infantería del ejército romano, formando la espina dorsal de las legiones y las unidades auxiliares romanas. Constaba de 80 hombres distribuidos en 10 contubernios -en latín contubernia- de 8 hombres cada uno. Cada contubernio se alojaba en una tienda o cubículo de barracón de 6 plazas -la cuarta parte del mismo estaba siempre de guardia-. Toda la centuria era comandada por el centurión, que era ayudado por un optio o lugarteniente y por un tesserarius o suboficial de seguridad. Tenía un estandarte o signum que era llevado por un signifer. Así mismo, cada centuria disponía de un buccinator, encargado de tocar la buccina, una especie de trompa utilizada para transmitir órdenes acústicas a modo de toques. Las centurias se agrupaban administrativamente por parejas formando manípulos de 160 infantes, y éstos, a su vez, operativamente en grupos de tres formando una cohorte de 480 legionarios. A título excepcional, la primera cohorte, formada por los hombres más aguerridos de la legión, se componía de sólo 5 centurias.
