Plumeria rubra

Plumeria rubra

Franchipán, frangipani, Guiee Chachi or Cacalosúchil is the common name of a species of vegetables that thrives in the tropical zone of America. The Plumeria genus honors Charles Plumier, a seventeenth-century French botanist who described several plant species in the intertropical zone. The name frangipani with which this plant is known in several languages is due to an Italian marquess of this name, who created in the sixteenth century a perfume based on this plant. The genus consists of 8 species of trees and shrubs originating in Central America, known for their intensely fragrant flowers. The trees can reach 9 m high. The branches contain a poisonous milky sap. In the tropics, flowers that are terminal and white appear before leaves and continue to sprout for most of the year. In subtropical climates flowers appear in spring. Most of the plumerias in the gardens are hybrids. In Nicaragua it is known as sacuanjoche and is officially one of the national symbols of the country.
