Mocaná

Mocaná

The Mokaná are an Amerindian town that inhabits the municipalities of Tubará, Malambo, Galapa, Usiacurí, Baranoa and Puerto Colombia but its primary municipality was Tubará, in the department of Atlántico, Colombia. Their language is part of the Malibu languages, very little documented and whose kinship is conjectured but has not been rigorously tested. Before the Spanish conquest they populated the fertile lands to the river Magdalena. The Crown assigned them Resguardos in the territory they occupy today. After ending a civil war in 1885 was declared vacant its title by a maneuver. They reorganized their Cabildos in 1905 and maintained it until the violence prevented it in 1948. Thanks to the Constitution of 1991 they found conditions to be reorganized and now the Mocaná indigenous Cabildos operate in the mentioned municipalities. It is known that the word mokaná meant in its language "without feathers", since these towns did not use them like the other tribes. Of this extinct language, few words are known and toponymy.
