Sambuca

La Sambuca is a sweet and strong liqueur based on anise, typical of Italy and more specifically of Latium. The "sambuca" also receives the affectionate diminutive of "sambuchina". The Community legislation regulates it by granting it a "sales denomination". Among the requirements for this liqueur to be issued as "sambuca" is required to be made with anise, green and starry, and even with other aromatic herbs; But the presence of elder in the liquor is not required. "Sambuco" means "elder"; That is, the shrub known as Sambucus nigra L. According to Zingarelli, etymologically the liquor called "sambuca" derives from "sambuco" in the sense of elder, the aforementioned Sambucus nigra L. Emmanuel \u0026 Madelene Greenberg describes it as a flavored liquor with elderberry. Such claims raise the problem of explaining how it is possible that in an elder's liquor elder can be absent. In fact it does not contain it. Elderberry does not appear to be very necessary for the liquor result. Another etymology has been proposed.
