radioisotope

Radioisotope

Radionuclides, or less strictly radioisotopes, contraction of radioactivity and of nuclide or isotope, are atoms whose nucleus is unstable and therefore radiating. A radioelement is a chemical element in which all known isotopes are radioisotopes. This instability can be due to an excess of protons, neutrons or both. Radioisotopes exist naturally but can also be produced artificially by a nuclear reaction. During a nuclear disaster or during an atomic explosion, a large quantity of radionuclides are propelled into the atmosphere, propagate around the globe and fall more or less rapidly on the ground. This bar graph compares the radioisotope readings recorded in the field in June 2011 to 500 meters from the Fukushima Unit I plant with equivalent data provided in an OECD report for the Chernobyl disaster.
