Sympodial comes from the prefix "sym" and "podial", in reference to the fact that the sympodial plants develop a succession of stems united between them. The sympodial branching is characterized by the apical degeneration of a bud causing the stem to grow in a zigzag pattern. Sympodial growth plants have a specialized model of lateral growth in which the apical meristem is limited. The latter may be either used to create an inflorescence or other specialized structure, or abort. The growth then proceeds by a lateral meristem, which in turn repeats the same process. The result is that the stem, which appears to be continuous, results in fact from multiple meristems, unlike plants with monopodal stems originating from a single meristem. An example is the Orchidaceae Laelia. The apical meristem of the rhizome forms an ascending bulbous stem called pseudobulb and the apical meristem terminates its growth in the form of a terminal inflorescence.

Ce dernier peut être, soit utilisé pour créer une inflorescence ou une autre structure spécialisée, soit avorter. La croissance se poursuit alors par un méristème latéral, lequel répète à son tour le même processus. Le résultat est que la tige, qui semble être continue, résulte en fait de méristèmes multiples, contrairement aux plantes à tiges monopodiales provenant d'un seul méristème. Un exemple est l'Orchidaceae Laelia. Le méristème apical du rhizome forme une tige renflée ascendante appelé pseudobulbe et le méristème apical termine sa croissance sous forme d'une inflorescence terminale.
