और चित्र इन तीनों कलाओं का चरमोत्कर्ष इन गुफाओं में
दृष्टिगोचर होता है जिसका निर्माणकाल ई० पू० दूसरी शती
(गुहा संख्या १०, १२, १३) सं लेकर ७वीं शती तक
(बिहार गुहा १, २) है । आरंभिक गुहाओं में बोद्धों की
हीनयान शाखा के प्रभाव दृष्टिगोचर होते हैं । शिल्प और चित्रों
में भगवान् बुद्ध की प्रधानना है । १९वीं गुहा सर्वोत्कृष्ट है ।
इसके भित्तिचित्रों में भगवान् बुद्ध और उनके जीवन की
विविध घटनाएँ एवं विभिन्न जातक कथाओं के चित्र अत्यंत सधे
हाथों से अंकित हैं । रंग ऐसे पक्के और चटकीले हैं, मानों
कारीगर न उन्हें अभी अभी समाप्त किया है । ५० फुट से
अधिक प्रशस्त मंडप के ऊपर की छत तक अलंकृत है । अन्यान्य
गुफाओं की चित्रसमृद्धि भी अत्यंत उच्च कोटि की है । ये
गुफाँएँ भारतीय स्वर्णयुग के सांस्कृतिक, कलात्मक और
आध्यात्मिक उपलब्धियों की प्रत्यक्ष साक्षी हैं ।
