१एक पौधा जिसकी
खेती पहले रंग के लिये बहुत होती थी ।
विशेष—यह पौधा प्रत्येक दूसरे वर्ष बोया जाता है और दो फुट
ऊँचा होता है । इसका मूल रूप ३०-४० फूट का पूरा पेड़ होता है । इसके दो भेद हैं— एक मोटी आल और दूसरी छोटी आल ।
छोटी आल फसल के बीच से बोई जाती है और मोटी आल
बड़े पेडों के बीज से आषाढ में बोई जाती है । इसकी छाल
और जड गडाँसे से काटकर हौज में सड़ने के लिये डाल दी
जाती है और कई दिनों में रंग तैयार होता है । कहते हैं,
इससे रंगे हुए कपडे़ में दीमक महीं लगती ।

पहाड़ी आलू बहुत बडे़ होते हैं । आलू दो तरह के होते
हैं लाल और सफेद । यह पौधा वास्तव में अमेरिका
का है । वहाँ से सन् १५८० ई० में यह युरोप में गया ।
भारतवर्ष में इसका उल्लेख सबसे पहले उस भोज के विवरण
में आता है जो सन् १६१५ ई० में सर टामस रो को आसफ
खाँ की ओर से अजमेर में दिया गया था । जब पहले पहल
आलू भारतवर्ष में आया या तब हिंदू लोग उसे नहीं खाते थे;
