सफेद रंग का एक प्रसिद्ध पक्षी । उ०—
(क) बगली नीर बिचारिया सायर चढ़ा कलंक । और पखेरू
पीबिया हंस न बोरे चंच ।—कबीर (शब्द०) । (ख)
बद्दलनि बुनद बिलोको बगलान बाग बँगलान बेलिन बहार
बरसा की है ।— पद्माकर (शब्द०) ।
विशेष—इस पक्षी की टांगें चोंच ओर गला लंबा ओर पूँछ
नाम मात्र की, बहुत छोटी होती है । इसके गले पर के पर
अत्यंत कोमल होते हैं और किसी किसी के सिर पर चोटी
भी होती है । यह पक्षी झुंड़ में या अलग अलग दिन भर
पानी के किनारे मछली, केकड़े आदि पकड़ने की ताक में खड़ा
रहता है । इसकी कई जातियाँ होती हैं । जिनके वर्ण और
आकार भिन्न भिन्न होते हैं ।— (क) अंजन नारी वा सेन
जिसका रंग नीलापन लिए होता है । (ख) बगली, खोच
बगला वा गड़हबगलिया जो छोटी और मटमैले रंग की
होती है और धान के खेतों, तालों और गड़हियों आदि में
रहती है ।(ग) गैबगला वा सुरखिया बगला जो डंगरों के
झुंड के साथ तालों में रहता है और उनके ऊपर के छोटे
छोटे कीड़ों को खाता है । (घ) राजबगला जो तालों और
झीलों में रहता है और जिसका रग अत्यत उज्वल होता है । यह बड़ा भी होता है और इस जाति के तीन वर्ष से
अधिक अवस्था के पक्षियों के सिर पर चोटी होती है । बगलों
का शिकार प्रायः उनके कोमल परों के लिये किया जाता है ।
वैद्यक में इसका मांस, मधुर, स्निग्ध, गुरु और अग्निप्रकोपक
तथा श्लेष्मवर्धक माना गया है ।
