विशेष— बडे़ द्वीपों को महाद्वीप कहते हैं । बहुत से छोटे छोटे
द्वीपों के समूह को द्वोपपु ज या द्वीपमाला कहते हैं । द्वीप दो
प्रकार के होते हैं— साधारण और प्रवालज । साधारण द्वीप
दो प्रकार से बनते हैं—एक दो भूगभंस्थ अग्नि के प्रकोप से
समुद्र के नीचे से उभड़ आते हैं । दूसरे आसपास की भूमि के
धँस जाने से और वहाँ पानी आ जाने से बनते हैं । प्रवालज
द्वीपों की सृष्टि मूँगों से होती है । ये बहुत सूक्ष्म कृमि हैं जो
थूहर के पेड़ के आकार का पिंड बनाकर समुद्रतल में जमे
रहते हैं । इन्हीं छोटे छोटे कीड़ों के शरीर से सहस्त्रों वर्ष में
इकट्ठा होते होते बड़ा सा पर्वत बन जाता है और समुद्र के
ऊपर निकल आता है जिसे प्रवालज द्वीप कहते हैं । इन दोनों के अतिरिक्त एक तीसरे प्रकार का द्वीप भी होता है जिसे
सरिदभव कह सकते हैं । इस प्रकार के द्वीप प्रायः बड़ी बड़ी
नदियों के मुहानों पर, जहाँ वे समूद्र में गिरती हैं, बन जाते
हैं । उन द्वीपों में कितने तो इतने छोटे होते हैं कि समुद्र में
एक छोटे से टीले से अधिक नहीं दिखाई पड़ते पर बडे़ द्वीप
भी होते हैं जिनमें पेड़ पौधे होते हैं और पशु पक्षी मनुष्य आदि
रहत हैं ।
२. पुराणानुसार पृथ्वी के सात बडे़ विभाग ।
विशेष— पुराणों में पृथ्वी सात सात द्वीपों में विभक्त की गई है ।
समुद्र और द्वीपों की उत्पत्ति के संबंध में यह कथा है ।
महाराज प्रियव्रत ने यह सोचा कि एक बार में सूर्य पृथिवी के एक ही और उजाला करता है जिससे दूसरी ओर अंधकरा
रहता है । उन्होंने एक पहिए की एक चमचमाती गाड़ी पर
सवार होकर सात बार पृथिवी की परिक्रमा की । गाड़ी के
पहिये के धँसने से पृथिवी पर सात वर्तुलाकार गड्ढे पड़ गए
जो सात समुद्र बन गए । इन्हीं सातों समुद्रों से वेष्ठित होने से
सात द्वीपों की सृष्टि हुई । इनमें सबके बीच में जबूद्वीप है जो
चारों ओर से क्षार समूद्र से वेष्ठित है और जिसके बीच में
मेरु पर्वत है । क्षार समूद्र के उस पार दूसरा द्वीप प्लक्षद्वीप है
जो जंबूद्वीप से दूना बड़ा है । तीसरा द्वीप शाल्मली द्वीप है ।
यह प्लक्षद्वीप से भी द्विगुण है । चौथे द्वीप का नाम कुशद्वीप है
जो शाल्मली का भी दूना है । पाँचवाँ द्वीप क्रौंचद्वीप है, जो
कुशद्वीप का दूना है । छठवाँ द्वीप शाकद्वीप क्रौंच से दूना बड़ा
है और सातवें द्वीप का नाम पुष्करद्वीप है । यह क्रौचद्वीप का
दूना है । पर भास्कराचार्य जी का मत है कि पृथ्वी के आधे
भाग में क्षारसमूद्र से वेष्ठित जंबूद्वीप है और आधे में शेष
प्लक्षद्वीपादि छह द्वीप हैं । ये सातों द्वीप यथाक्रम क्षार, लवण,
क्षीर, दधि, रस आदि समुद्रों से आवेष्ठित हैं ।
