एजेंसी संज्ञा स्त्री० [अं०] १. आढ़त । वह स्थान जहाँ किसी कार- खाने या कंपनी का माल एजेंट के द्वारा बिकता हो । २. वह स्थान जहाँ एजेंट या गुमाश्ते किसी कंपनी या कारखाने के लिये माल खरीदते हो । ३. वह स्थान जहाँ शासक या सरकार या गवर्नरजनरल (बड़े लाट) या स्वामी का एजेंट या प्रतिनिधि रहता था या जहाँ उसका कार्यालय है । ४. वह प्रांत जो राजनीतिक दृष्टि से एजेंट के अधिकारयुक्त था । जैसे—राजपूतना एजेंसी, मध्यभारत एजेंसी । विशेष—अँग्रेंजों के शासनकाल में हिंदुस्तान में पाँच रेजिड़ें- सियाँ (हैदराबाद, मैसूर, बड़ौदा, काश्मीर और सिकम में) और चार एजेंसियाँ (राजपूताना, मध्यभारत, बिलोचिस्तान तथा पश्चिमोत्तर सीमाप्रांत में) थी । एक एक एजेंटी के अंतर्गत कई राज्य थे । इन एजेंसियों में सब मिलाकर कोई १७५ राज्य रियासतें थीं । प्रत्येक एजेंसी में गवर्नर जनरल या बड़े लाट का एजेंट या प्रतिनिधि रहता था । इन एजेंटों के सहायतार्थ रियासतों में पोलिटिकल अफसर रहते थे । जिस स्थान पर ये लोग रहते वहाँ प्रायः अँगरेज सरकार की छावनी होती थी और कुछ फौज रहती थी ।
