एक बहुत बड़ा समुद्री जंतु जो आज कल पाए

बच्चे देती है और अपने दो थनों से दूध पिलाती है । बहुत

मछलियाँ खाकर रहता है । यह बहुत देर तक पानी में डूबा
नहीं रह सकता । फेफड़े या गलफड़े के अतिरिक्त दो छेद
इसके सिर में होते हैं जिनसे यह साँस भी लेता है और पानी
का फुहारा भी छोड़ता है । इसकी आँखें बहुत छोटी होती हैं ।
पृथ्वी के उत्तरी भाग के समुद्रों में ह्वेल बहुत पाए जाते हैं
और उनका शिकार होता है । ह्वेल की हड्डियों से हाथीदाँत की तरह अनेक प्रकार के सामान बनते हैं । इसकी अँताड़ियों में
एक प्रकार का सुगंधित द्रव्य जमा हुआ मिलता है जो 'अंबर' के नाम से प्रसिद्ध है और जो भारतवर्ष, अफ्रिका और
दक्षिण अमेरिका के समुद्रतट पर बहता हुआ पाया जाता है ।
प्राणिविज्ञानवेत्ताओं का कहना है कि ह्वेल पूर्व कल्प में स्थलचारी
जंतु था और पानी के किनारे दलदलों में रहा करता था ।

यद्यपि उनमें हड्डियाँ वे ही बनी रहीं जो घोड़े, गधे आदि के
अगले पैरों में होती हैं । हमारे यहाँ के प्राचीन ग्रंथों में 'तिमिंगिल' नामक एक बड़े भारी मत्स्य या जलजंतु का उल्लेख
मिलता है जो संभव है, ह्वेल हो हो ।
