बड़ी अनेक जातियाँ होती हैं और यह लंबाई में चार अंगुल
से प्रायः एक हाथ तक होती है । इसका सिर और मुँह मोटा
होता है और दुम की तरफ इसकी मोटाई बराबार कम होती
जाती है । यह मछली अपना शरीर इस प्रकार झुका सकती
है कि सिर के साथ इसकी दुम लग जाती है । इसके सिर
पर उँगलियों के आकार के दों छोटे छोटे अंग होते हैं जिनके
सिरों पर आँखे होती हैं । इन आँखों से बिना मुड़े यह चारों ओर देख सकती है । यह अपने अंड़े सदा अपने पेट के अगले
भाग में छोती पर ही रखती है । इसके शरीर के पिछले आधे
भाग पर बहुत कड़े छिलके होते है । जो समय समय पर आप-
से आप साँप की केचुली की तरह उतर जाते हैं । छिलके
उतर जाने पर कुछ समय तक इसका शरीर बहुत कोमल
रहता है पर फिर ज्यों का त्यों हो जाता हैं । इसका मांस
खाने में बहुत स्वादिष्ट होता है । बहुधा मांस के लिये यह
सुखाकर भी रखी जाती है ।
