नारायण गंधमादन पर्वत पर तपस्या कर रहे थे । उस समय
दक्ष का यज्ञ हो रहा था । इस यज्ञ में दक्ष ने रुद्र के भाग की
कल्पना नहीं की थी जिससे क्रुद्ध होकर दक्ष का यज्ञ नष्ट करने के लिये रुद्र ने एक शुल फेंका था । वह शुल यज्ञ नष्ट करने के
उपरांत जाकर बड़े जोर से नारायण के वक्षस्थल पर गिरा और
उसी समय नारायण के हुंकार से पराजित और आहत होकर
फिर शंकर के हाथ में जा पहुँचा । इसपर रुद्र क्रोध करके नरनारायण पर चढ़ दौड़े । नारायण ने तो रुद्र का गला पकड़
लिया और नर ने उन्हें मारने के लिये एक सींक उड़ाई जो
बड़ा भारी पशु बन गई । नारायण और रुद्र में भीषण युद्ध
होने लगा । उसमें पृथ्वी तथा आकाश में अनेक प्रकार के
उपद्रव होने लगे । जब ब्रह्मा ने आकर रुद्र को समझाया कि
ये स्वयं नारायण के अवतार हैं और किसी समय तुम्हारी
भी सृष्टि इन्हीं के क्रोध से हुई थी तब रुद्र ने प्रार्थना करके
नारायण को प्रसन्न किया । इसके उपरांत ऱुद्र के साथ नरनारायण की घनिष्ठ मित्रता हो गई । महाभारत के नारायणो-
पाख्यान में यह भी लिखा है कि परब्रह्म के अवतार नर और
नारायण नामक दो ऋषियों ने नारायणी अर्थात् भागवत्
धर्म का प्रचार किया था और उनके कहने से जब नारद ऋषि
श्वेतद्विप गए थे तब स्वयं भगवान् ने उनको इस धर्म का
उपदेश किया था । देवीभागवत में लिखा है कि ब्रह्मा के पुत्र
धर्म ने दक्ष की दस कन्याओं से विवाह किया था जिनके गर्भ
से हरि, कृष्ण, नर और नारायण नामक चार पुत्र उत्पन्न
हुए थे । इनमे से हरि और कृष्ण तो योगाभ्यास करते थे और
नरनारायण हिमालय पर कठिन तपस्या करते थे । उस समय
इंद्र ने डरकर इनकी तपस्या भंग करने के लिये काम, क्रोध
और लोभ की सृष्टि की और उन तीनों को नर नारायण के
सामने भेजा, परंतु नरनारायण की तपस्या भंग नहीं हुई ।
तब इंद्र ने कामदेव की शरण ली । कामदेव अपने साथ वसंत
और रंभा, तिलोत्तमा आदि अप्सराओं को लेकर नरनारायण के पास पहुँचे । उस समय अप्सराओं के गाने आदि से नरनारायण की आँखे खुली । उन्होने सब बातें समझ ली और इंच
को खज्जित करने के लिये तुरंत अपनी जाँच से एक बहुत सुंदर
